It's impressive how much older companies improved in a year or two. As a rule of thumb you're better off with the advancements in the new stuff, especially as far as combiners go.That's what's made me so hesitant to start collecting 3Ps; a lot of the earlier stuff felt like it got surpassed pretty fast as far as design and even basic concepts go.For all the enthusiasm behind early 3P stuff, a lot of it felt a bit dated; like Eenergon/Cybertron figures aesthetically. At the time the official line was on a pretty decent upswing , so in comparison it felt off mixing the two. Now its more like the opposite,with a lot of 3Ps looking more polished. Still, there's a few contemporary 3P figures you can tell will look outdated pretty soon.
