The way that part is constructed would mean all the force applied to move it up or down will be applied to the glued part and it will come undone.I've had a couple of stands break in the same area due to falls, and have glued them no problem. Use good glue, let it dry, and stop being a hamhands.
You can also:
1- Keep that screw lose until you have the position you want, thus no pressure on the joint when you start posing it.
2- Use a pin and pin it. There's room.
