The armor parts work on all RX-78 ANIME variants, but I'm not sure about the GM. The GM is highly similar to the RX-78, so I could see it working for at least some of the armor parts. Chest armor probably wouldn't work, but some of the arm/leg stuff might. Gonna have to try it out some time.

That's a very real concern, anon. It's scientifically proven that the likelihood of a Desert Zaku purchase increases 72% after the purchase of a Zaku Cannon.

One thing to consider, though, is that both Zakus are only going to get tougher (and probably more expensive) to get as time goes by. If you can take the hit, it might be better to scratch the itch now rather than later.
