I wasn’t suggesting a enclosed ball-joint, or for you to have a full range of of motion or free rotation, it would still be constrained by the surrounding muscles and connecting tendons. I was just saying that instead of forming a multi-axis open-pivot from a kluging of 3-4 separate bones meeting together, the same joint could be achieved with just two better shaped bones meeting together, with a bit more play in side-to-side horizontal pivoting so it can occur in the ankle rathe than occurring as torsion throughout the entire lower limb.
Basically something more akin to how your shoulder and hip joints work.
