>>9238986>Why do japanese Magical Girls sell so many dolls, but She-Ra has a hard time? Its always just seemed like a weird frankenstein creation of design by committee. I don't know any women who remember She-Ra as fondly as other 80's properties. I admit I'm too young to be around when it came out but my four sisters were target age for it and they all played with my older brother's MOTU figures, but when it comes to girl figures its all Cabbage Patch kids , strawberry shortcake, Hello Kitty, etc. Maybe it was popular for a while but it just doesn't seem to have the same staying power as those other lines.
IMO I think the problem is that the girls who were playing with MOTU liked those figures because they weren't typical girl toys. They leaned too hard on the princess and girl colors aesthetic and took out the grit. I get that this sounds more risky, but they should've done more of a fantasy art warrior women line. Not any more scantily clad than Teela or Sorceress, but tougher, yet pretty looking women. Like something out of Frazetta or Vallejo. It sounds like a harder sell and maybe it would've been, but it could've stood out more.
