The toy doesn't do that. He just gets a dozen spikes a few millimeters long on his back.
Kinda really lame.
The slightly neat part is that you can get them to spin in unison thanks to two wheels. One's exposed and the other mostly hidden.
The friction of the rubber causes them to grab each other and the wheels on the outside like gears.
I just think it's a clever simple solution to what could have ended being a more complicated system.
