This has nothing to do with "free speech" or the like, it's just how a lot of the community is. It's even worse on boards/threads that focus on anything productive due to it's crabs-in-a-bucket NGMI mentality (fuck /ic/ by the way).
It's not just 4chan either but most forms of popular social media in general. Social media is an utter cancer and there has been many studies concluding its negative impact on mental well-being.
People need real non-social media socialization to live healthy, and perhaps it doesn't affect you personally (or at least so you believe) but it doesn't mean it can't affect anyone. You can definitely tell sometimes when somebody's only form of social "interaction" is just shitposting on 4chan by the way they articulate themselves outside of the website, even.
