But WB is full of cocaine fiends who don't care about comics, so they just threw shit on the wall to see what would stick and only the characters these coke fiends knew about.
Leading to a lot of shoddy movies and ignoring the vast sea of characters they owned.
Marvel wasn't really able to exploit their characters by themselves, so they licensed it off to various studios over the decades. In the 90s, to keep on operating as a business, they all but "sold" off their most popular (for the mass media) to various companies.
Back in the mid-00s, most licensed properties started to revert back to themselves (aside from the "sold" ones) and they started to create their own production house to have full control over these characters. Since Marvel knew their characters best, they started to exploit their characters fully and audiences fell in love with even the most B and C-list characters in a way that only ardent comic fans used to.
With cartoons, DC enjoyed a lot of success, because there was a lot of cross over of talent between their comic and animation operations. Marvel had their own animation production house, but was rather limited and operated on the opposite side of the country. This meant that there was little cross over and Marvel properties had a mixed success with cartoons.
In short, the more the comic talent is involved with comic properties, the more successful and better their mass media is.
