OG Bardock was iconic because of this moment. By retconning it they essentially took away everything that made the character so important:
• An impulsive rebel
• Prideful, like Vegeta (A trait Goku lost due to his head injury)
• Passionate enough to fly into Space in order to be face to face with his nemesis, regardless of the consequences.
• Refused to turn his back, taking the full brunt of a planet destroying ki blast head on with no regret.
• A natural leader and embodied the legend of the super saiyan. Which is why Freiza never forgot his face.
Watching the broly movie literally left me scratching my head wondering whether they thought OG Bardock represented 'toxic masculinity' and had to be toned down to 'numale' status in order to fit the new agenda. It's not the first character to meet this fate.
