The reason gaming is as bigger than before is just because those of us from the 80s and 90s continued playing video games into adulthood. So you have a much larger segment of the population gaming than before.
Kids' demographic in gaming pretty much peaked in the late 90s, which is to say it went from 95% to 98.92999% and hasn't gone down since.
