One can still find remnants of that style, notably in copies and imitations of a Marx set of US GIs. Decades ago when I went to Red Lobster for the first time ever I was presented with a choice of toys from a treasure box they had for children. Among them was a small packet of army men which ever after have been known as the Red Lobster soldiers in my army. They're rather smaller than their Marx ancestors; I would later get a pile more of them in the same size but significantly simplified detail by redeeming tickets from arcade games at the mall amusement park.
Among the poses is a kneeling soldier with a mortar round in his right hand; unfortunately Marx produced their mortars separately from the soldiers so he's forever raising his round in futility (I would hand-wave this into a more useful grenade, until I saw Saving Private Ryan anyway). I did manage to get a few BMC mortars that would probably work with these guys.
