That said selection is likely better in 1/48, so the odds of you having this or that specific variant to build would go up a bit there (whereas if you just want a Corsair or a Mustang, well, you'll find that in 1/72 too). For the really niche stuff though I wonder if 1/72 might not have a bit of an advantage, but then we're talking stuff like an MFI-9 rather than a Bearcat.
