I find it extremely useful for cutout: it creates a mask (duh) on your layer (re-duh) which you can fill either with black or white.
Black parts will become transparent while white parts are visible. It's way better than the eraser tool, because you can always salavage it if you make a mistake.
You'll see on my pics I used it to smoothly erase the borders of the lens layer (told you using this pic was a bad choice)
