I could be wrong, but the supporting media and marketing didnt really try to evoke much more than "remember Bionicle?". Not explain the story, the characters, the stakes until year 2 with something like that netflix show. G1 seemed to do it so well and was very much up in your face about all the different places you could go to get more bionicle content.
I kind of got that sense from watching a video about the Mata Nui Online Game, as well as some other ones.
