Statues are for when you love a character so much that you want to own a monument to it. It comes from a pure/fine art sensibility. But there's a fun, hobbyist aspect to figures that you can't get from a giant, static statue. For some properties, I want a show-stopping piece that makes me feel like pic related. For others, I want to have a more engaging experience with the pieces.
