The only difference between then and now is that toy companies aren't producing a single wave each year. This is why when you used to go to TRU they had entire shelves full of the same toys, stacks and stacks of the same vehicle or character.
They switched up that way of production, spltting it up into quarterly waves sometime in the 90s.
They way more toys that way, creating more regular store traffic in order to find the newest figures.
