There's no control, it's just pushing it around into peaks and valleys which results in much less even coverage. The difference should now be illustrated. This may seem counterintuitive, but it works because what you are doing is controlling the amount of active liquidity. If you have less of it, the pigment will tend to stay where it is deposited and not want to flow around. This is the secret to painting thinned paint with a brush, it's a lot easier.
