Keeping a few arms and legs around helped me restore an early 90s Tyco Ariel doll. Tyco toys made the most wonderful mermaid tails. Better than anything Mattel, Disney Store, or Hasbro has ever created. They made them out of good quality materials, and the fin was like a pillow. They would create a double sided fin shaped pillow and would stuff it. It's something you don't see doll companies do today unless its for a Disney Store designer mermaid doll.
Anyways while they dedicated so much time and effort into the fin the legs sadly popped off very easily. I found a vintage Ariel doll at the thrift store that was missing her left leg. I had a leg that was just about that size in my doll parts box, and it snapped right on. It ended up looking perfect even without having to cover it up with a dress or tail.
