I recently picked up pic related and despite being relatively simple for a robot id consider it pretty creative. It looks iconic and its built sturdy enough for younger kids to play with without damaging it.
Whole adults nay hate 'surprise' toys and they are terrible for the environment you can't say they weren't an innovation when they took the market by storm. Basically giving a child the excitement of unwrapping toys like you would on Christmas at any time was genius in a diabolical way.
Stuff like that is where innovation is going. Other than improving articulation there just isn't much you can do with action figures. Adult collectors hate gimmicks and want a ton of joints and for the most part toys are catering to that.
I'd also say a lot of toy concepts may be recycled but they're also being perfected. I had a baby eats a lot as a child and it was an awefull mess. The toy frequently got jammed and the 'food' mixture was a pain to clean out.
This year's shitting flamingo toy is like a perfected version of that concept. It uses better tech to provide the fun of a pooping toy without the mess.
