There is some fun to be had in envisioning characters in different way though I don't understand the Gundam comparision above, it looks to me more like details more based around sculptors tastes than artstyle.
I like Star Wars as an example very well, Rebels has a very realistic style character wise, it's the vehicles and droids that look different and stylized, thus the realistic figures from Hasbro are what should be made. But then there are designs that change so drastically between reality and cartoons that it is impossible to decide which one is better so I wish they would do all kinds of stuff. Grievous is one of these cases: Animated, Movie, Movie with Animated colors, Animated with movie colors. But that probably has more to do with my obsession for this design than in general.
