Drama is present, but if you are steadfast in your dedication to just enjoying the hobby you can avoid it. If you're the kind of person that keeps a good social standing with all of your fellow club members, the drama most likely won't stick to you and will cluster around those who dwell in it. The most damaging thing for any club is to lose a paying member, so if you feel like you need to back out because of other people being dicks, talk to your president or an elected officer if the club has one. If there's no repairing the situation, don't be afraid to leave. Any club that allows bad bullshit is ultimately going to sink anyway.
Negative bullshit aside, It's been worth it. I've learned a shitload of stuff about my own trains and about the hobby in general by joining a club. Right now I hold a voluntary position as club mechanic, but I want to start learning more about the layout design and construction stuff. I don't know a damn thing about laying track yet.
