I don't think the problem is with the 86 movie stuff as much as the movie/Prime and onward stuff. Maybe the movie bots were a bit too different, but there's still some consideration as to how they'd transform. Hot Rod, for example, uses traditional diaclone design elements, just stylized; even his helmet resembles Prowl's, just streamlined.
My problem comes more from modern character designs where the designer puts alt-mode bits anywhere without giving thought how those parts will get there on a retail toy. Stuff like TFP Ratchet's chest doors or movie Bumblebee's license plate on his pelvis.
