When Bay got more control characters more became just mashed steel with really weirdly human looking parts, just straight up human faces (see pic, concept art of that weird trader bot in TLK)
I Honestly still really like many of the early designs because they're actually really well made, all the original Autobots are all good, and Starscream is and example of experimentation that isn't really encouraged anymore.
Also Blackout is fucking great.
