The main reason I think they keep it in its packaging is because they believe it keeps its value better and makes them feel like they didn't use anything in the transaction. It goes up maybe a dollar or two in value and it makes them feel good, no better than if they were to take it out and to be worth pennies. It's pretty much a sign of autism but to each their own.
It also could be them preserving history that they're afraid to lose. I'm sure everyone on this board wished they kept some of their childhood toys to either sell or to just have again because of the quality or memories.
