The set was a mountain fortress that had a swinging door, bunker partway up the side and more bunkers on top, with a button that made various combat noises. It came with two armies: the purple Germans and Airfix British Paras in green. It also had an Abrams tank, Humvee and Apache gunship, all in green, and some half-circle bunkers in purple. We still have most of the set kicking around, not sure about the mountain fortress but it might be in a bin somewhere.
I have vague recollections of the toy section in the store where he got the set; there may have been smaller sets with just the soldiers but I can't be certain. Every so often when buying bunches of secondhand army men I'll find a few more of those guys; recently I even got another Abrams and Apache which was a nice surprise. Must've been a popular set but I've been struggling to find any reference to it online.
