Digital zoom works better than simply using the camera's zoom wheel because it changes the way the camera lens works depending on which zoom multiplier you have it at. At a lower zoom, objects in the foreground and background appear closer together. At a higher zoom, the objects in the background don't change in scale as much, but the objects in the foreground appear much closer to the camera. If you want to make something in the background appear larger than it actually is, use a higher zoom.
However, the tradeoff is that at a higher zoom, everything that isn't exactly as far away from the lens as what you're focusing on will be out of focus.
