I think it depended on the colorist, but a lot of the artists did draw the shooter, which was shaded and/or given more detail in close ups. So it wasn't always necessary to draw it or color it. It's akin to how the normal functional webshooters are only actually detailed (sometimes under the glove, other times over) when they're close up too, or being pointed out, but there's no sign of the button in 99% of shots of his hands.
And then the shooters disappeared altogether, because peter found out the suit can do shooters for him. No need to spend money for the chemicals to make his webs.
Or maybe the shooter only came back when he ditched the symbiote but kept on using the black suit design.
It's been like 20 years since i last read these comics, so my memory is fuzzy.
