Now that I think about it, in many of the cg animations the inactive Kanohi masks are dull silver in color, and after the Toa wear or "power up" them, they take the elemental color of the carrier.
Matoran only have weak elemental powers dormant in them iirc, so maybe they're unable to do the same.
