DCUC was downhill by its third or fourth wave, because they basically stopped producing new bodies and the jump prices at the same time.
People were basically begging Mattel to switch to 1:18 because of how cheapo they got, because they noticed Hasbro was stepping their game up with their 1:18 line, and then Mattel's 1:18 line itself was a joke at launch.
This was by 2008 and the 1:18 line was 2009, btw.
Undoubtedly, the recession and Chinese labor issues was behind their cheaping out and increasing prices, but that shit was still cheapo as fuck, especially when other companies were releasing better.

In 2008, NECA was producing their ACE classic TMNT and McFarlane was at releasing their A-game with the mass market Halo figures. All these figures still hold up today, unlike almost everything else at the time.
