You really can't get a faithfully scaled set to link up with others because you still run across the problem of it becoming way too expensive.
It's easier just to set up pieces here and there, with you working on some sort of background to make it look like some medieval setting.
McFarlane only does full scale settings because of how lego blocks work.
To get the effect with buildable sets, you'd need to add wall pieces to every single set to put on the stairs (leading to nowhere) and entrance/hall.
With just dio pieces, you can be a lot more... liberal, by putting them on a concrete floor and setting an entrance 3 feet away from staircase, with other little dio pieces that came with the sets sprinkled about.
Chaining them together only makes the setting much smaller to fit the budget.
