You guys can argue semantics or things that have a minor impact till you're blue in the face, but at the end of the day this has always come down to the parents. My mom teaches preschoolers, so she's interacted with probably hundreds of families over the years. She says nowadays practically every student has a tablet they bring to school while many have few or no toys at home because the parents feel it's a waste of money. She bought one of her kids a Legends Spider-Man for his birthday and he was so excited since he didn't have a single Spider-Man figure despite it being his favorite superhero.
Even with this hobby becoming more socially acceptable, the average adult isn't like us. They're not going to be as invested in buying their children more than a few action figures at the current prices. Especially if the kid is prone to breaking them or quickly losing interest because the parent wasn't attentive enough to buy them something they actually wanted. So it's not so much "kids don't play with toys" as "kids can't play with toys their parents won't buy."
