The V5 and V5 Celebrity didn't have this, but instead you could send your pets out on a vacation and then pick them up when you were ready, which functioned essentially the same as pausing.
The M!x and Meets/On include a feature where you can leave your Tama at a daycare during the day, but you have to pick it up before the end of the day or it'll get upset that you forgot it. You can also leave them with their parents from the second generation onward.
