>>10232607malls were already dying in the late 90s, and early 00s. Extremely greedy owners and businesses inflated the price of real estate, which priced out a lot of businesses and the 2008-2011 recession created an even more fucked up situation. Plus, there was a ton of fuckery in the supply/distribution chain that fucked over places like Sam Goody/Suncoast/MotionPicturewhatever. similar to the comic book crash in the 90s.
Nevermind walmart's dominance, which fucked over a lot of the normal priced, everyday purchases like clothes, electronics, toys, movies, games, etc. Their "low prices" weren't that much of a discount, but people still rallied over their 23¢ cheaper shit, instead of going to the mall stores.
If anything, shit like social media led to further deaths, since kids usually used malls to socialize.
Amazon didn't become a commonplace market place until after 2010. Even then, it took until 2016 for them to actually become common (read: selling as much as Target). It still has not caught up to Walmart
Amazon caught up to KMart in 2012, btw.
