So for the Wirbelwind turret, I ended up going with the original plan of doing the airbrushed camo job before fully assembling the turret, and so far its looking like that was the correct course of action as none of the paint got inside the turret and now I have a map of where to re-apply the paint once everything is together.
I also hit the inside with some black grime powder to highlight edges and crevices I won't be able to access once it's all together and this sort of backfired because that meant having the upper half of the turret upside down when the dullcote was applied, and I'm sure you can see what happened with the obvious edge of it that didn't cure properly. That's something I hope to fix when I'm doing the repair round of airbrushing and then likely weathering a little to cover that up as well.
Plan for the weekend is to re-weather the crew using the drybrush idea another anon suggested a thread or two ago, gluing it all down, and then putting the putty on. Also, the gap isn't nearly as bad as it looks here, that part just doesn't like to sit down all the way but if you push down on it the fit gets tighter.
(and yes, the spare drive wheel slot is missing one of the ends, this is intentional because weirdly one of the Iron Cross markings has to go behind it.)
