It's likely that the designer of the box image failed to notice that it was a female torso (the breast lines are especially faint) and assumed the bodies of the scientist/astronaut could be swapped (you may recognize this as a key feature of Lego) depending on what role you what them to play. Given the non-standard design of the box this is most certainly the case; it likely didn't go through as much scrutiny as normal retail sets do.
