Just never buy a figure unless you can see yourself being satisfied with it once you have it. Pass up a great deal, be fickle over the scale, what have you.
Just think about whether you're really going to appreciate having that character and that design of them that the figure is representing, rather than focusing on the thrill of pre-orders opening/the full reveal by the manufacturer or even a great deal (bonus points, discount, etc)
When you've thought about it and are sure you're going to like it once you have it, paying a little extra or having passed up a discount won't rub you the wrong way. If your necessary expenses are so much that you couldn't buy it without the discount then you have other things to think about anyway.
Reverse is true in that even people who got figures for very cheap feel like it was wasted money because of something they didn't think of before buying (scale, lack of an accessory, etc)
