Thats kinda how i imagined the super lion or black knight castle with the raised baseplate set being used as an inner keep and the big "flat castle" in its extended form making up the front and the side builds completing the perimeter outer wall.
Off top of my head I don't think lego ever done castle with an inner redoubt or keep.
too many pieces i suppose and difficult for kids to play with and get access too all places
