The ball is in two parts, the bottom part seems to be all plastic and has a stand port in the back of it which is really nice, while the top of it is rubber for you to squeeze it around him, and you unpeg his arms a bit to sit him into it.
Before I leave him out in the ball 24/7 I think I'm going to cover basically the entire inner surface of the rubber half the ball with my foam padding tape. In my experience bare rubber resting against painted plastic usually results in unpainted plastic, I think the protection might be a good idea.
