There's characters like Wonder Woman, a powerful female character in a fantasy setting based on male conflict. But Wondy clearly is female in, outlook, thought, and emotions. She's often the vocal counter to her male colleagues.
But then there's Rey from Nu-Star Wars, who could have been male and it would have no real difference in the plot. But she's such a badly written character with no real defining personality quirks or flaws. And I don't think many males see her as a self insert type of character. Luke, yes. Finn, yes. But Rey, no.
