You have to break off the pommel because it is modeled to have two little break points where you cut it off, and the pommel slides over the handle much like the later versions of Figma Link's Master Sword.
I luckily have a picture of what it looks like cut. You see the hole in the end of the pommel, it slides over the end of the handle.
