Great personalities and the mutants were a real threat, Magneto, Charles and most humans had a good argument about each other extinction. It was a fight for the future.
Gay X-People is just... sex and parties? There is nothing to fight for, the future is here and it's fabulous. Everything now is just personal drama. There are no stakes, just writers beating each other to see who can fit more tokens into their teams.
