The typical way to do it is to have the pyro safely away from the toy but mask the distance through perspective while shooting compressed air at dirt in front of the subject and rapid firing the camera on a tripod with a remote.
Sgtbananas is king of this shit. Doesn’t really do it that often anymore but is one of, if not the first I’m aware of that used this technique
