Get on wikipedia and start reading, then check what kits exist for whatever catches your fancy, and whenever the level of care for the subject to shite kit ratio is good enough you get building. Also probably best not to make any real plans (and in particular to not buy) anything more than the next build or two ahead so as to not fill up half your house with unbuilt kits and then get depressed about it.

What kind of hit you take in details for it varies, some makers seem to go lazy on 1/48 and no really add the details they could, others treat 1/72 like toys. So it's a bit of a kit-by-kit basis. And if you ever want some less airworthy stuff to keep in company then there's plenty more armour in 1/72 than1/48.
