Turns out that's actually the backside, but the factory workers installed it backwards on like 95% of the copies.
Some guy took it apart and reinstalled it with the solid side facing forwards, which doesn't affect articulation at all and actually made it tuck in more neatly in dino mode.
I feel like I owe the designers an apology.
