First off, the tube extends all the way to the base of the piece for some reason, instead of terminating with enough gap to be flush with System studs when you plug it into a baseplate. I know this isn't just a change in the part because I compared it to a brand-new Duplo brick and that has the shorter tube like all my other Duplos. I suppose the tube is slightly longer because all the indents and space gaps on the top surface make it less sturdy so the tube needs to act as reinforcement when pressing down. On a Duplo-Duplo connection it works perfectly because the tube touches against the surface of the Duplo brick between the studs, but the System studs get in the way and you can't snap it all the way down flush. That's why I've got that 2x2 area carved out in the middle.
