DI is fun but only if you play the playsets in my opinion. Toy Box is only fun if you have a creative bone in your body and that's where most of their effort went into.

Think of it like any Lego game you can buy, characters are mostly the same with some slight gimmick being different (Though the gimmicks are a bit more pronounced with DI), enemies have i-frames between getting hit like in Lego games, and enemies explode into bits as do your characters. If you don't care for Lego games then you will probably want to steer clear of DI as it has the same problems as they do which would be that it's too easy (Extreme just makes you hit like you're using a Nerf Bat while dying in two hits with enemies that have extremely accurate shots), it's mainly you running through collecting stuff except now the locked stuff it tied to real purchases, and there's a good amount of challenges you can do.

3.0 > 1.0 > 2.0 in terms of playsets in my opinion, 2.0 just felt really bland.

Try any of the PC versions at all to get an idea of how the game works. If you're not creative then expect to shelve it as soon as you complete a playset, pretty much all the the levels you can download are utter garbage without any polish at all, and the few that do have polish usually have a game breaking bug, are really short, or love to throw waves of enemies at you after a bit.

1.0 PC gives you a free Play Set to play, and you unlock more if you log in every day along with characters I think.
2.0 Play Sets are pretty awful but they're gameplay if you just want that.
3.0 Play Sets are great, though The Force Awakens feels pretty short in comparison to Twilight of the Republic.
