Most animals can get attached to you, but not in the way a human or complex animal can.
An animal like this will try to interact with you even if it has no idea of how the game is played, but you can tell its trying pretty hard to figure it out. Imitation is one of the lowest forms of understanding, but it's how humans make friends too.
A animal's ability to read what you're doing shows a complexity to their minds and demonstrates that they actually understand what's going on, aka, empathy. So it shows that they actually understand human feelings and their outward expressions are proof of that, epsecially when it's not observed when around their own kind.
Also, horses are assholes. I'd say that they're as bad as cats, especially with how skittish they are (but unlike cats, they're very trusting), but those fuckers will purposely ruin your day because they think like psychopaths.
