I only bid on things at nearly a steal price, but enough to buy me some time if someone tries sniping it from me.
Throw an early max bid in well below the going rate to test the waters. If nobody else is interested, I get it dirt cheap.
On the other hand, some more valuable figures attract a bid shortly before the auction ends, and I just drop my real max bid in the final five seconds.
I've only lost with this method once or twice when trying to buy equipment for my shop. Those buyers are rarely interested in good deals, just getting their tools in a timely fashion.
Unless I NEED something urgently, which has never happened with /toy/ related buys, I always manage to score my items for less than half of whatever the current going rate is at the time.
