Cybertron uses a lot of the previous cast from Armada/Energon, including cast that sat out Energon like Red Alert. It uses concepts from the last two like Minicons. Unless you believe Excellion the random Hot Rod homage who has a visor has nothing to do with Hot shot, the HR homage who was named HotRod in Micron Legend, Cybertron was clearly meant to be a follow up.
The only thing they had minimal involvement in(and the only part that isn't connected initially) is the anime, which takara even later tried to connect. Of course, irony is the anime is the most prominent piece of storytelling the line has.
But hasbro actually did a lot to build up their Cybertron universe with the bios and extra cyberkey fiction. They were infamously frustrated Takara didn't follow through the plans with the anime which is why they stopped outsourcing the shows to them.
Its still a fun show, though
