For me, it was pretty random and i only knew something was coming out because it said so on the back of the card for toys or magazines like Toy Fare saying so.
Anyone remember the Speeder Bike shortage in the 90s? Rumors about the toy having lead and who knows what else, because it was a hard to find toy. All Star Wars toys were hard to find back then, including ape faced leia.
Even before this, with GI Joe, it was basically a fluke to find a new wave that just came out. So even when they were doing year round lines, i never found stuff like Vipers and other XXXXX Vipers except around Christmas time.
And kids buy are many toys as they used to. kids interests have not changed since the 90s.
